Partnerships between local jurisdictions and Listos staff are successful because Listos staff provides the classroom facilitation in a linguistically and culturally appropriate way, while jurisdictions provide the technical expertise. This combination of these two resources has proven to be very beneficial. In addition to teaching skills such as how to use a fire extinguisher, the Listos facilitators can serve as conduits between sometimes-feared First Responders and community members, allowing these two groups to engage during non-emergency situations. This removes barriers and creates trust, thereby making any future interactions easier and more productive.
According to Fire Chief Dan Orr, “Listos has allowed me to engage 70,000 Santa Maria residents that my department had previously been unable to engage. This is due to Listos’ ability to bridge the language and trust barriers between residents and firefighters.”
