Alertar y Preparar LISTOS was developed by Aware & Prepare to provide Spanish-language disaster preparedness education, both locally and nationally. The core of the Alertar y Preparar LISTOS design is based on building sustainable relationships and partnerships with local businesses, community leaders, and non-profit organizations.
The Alertar y Preparar LISTOS curriculum emphasizes targeted recruitment and Spanish-language presentations tailored to the specific cultural and linguistic needs of Latino communities. The Alertar y Preparar LISTOS methodology draws from lessons learned through a variety of widely-distributed disaster preparedness education tools and best practices of other non-English speaking public education initiatives.
Listos is a grass-roots disaster preparedness program that can be tailored to meet the individual needs of Spanish-speaking communities. The program is delivered in a format that is both culturally and linguistically appropriate for the target population.
Listos partners with community leaders, jurisdictions, non-profits, faith-based organizations, schools, and other community institutions. By partnering with these organizations, Listos provides disaster preparedness information to the Spanish-speaking community. Listos instructs the participants in the command structure of First Responders ensuring communication between Listos graduates and firefighters and police in the event of an emergency.
Our experience in working with First Responders and non-profit groups makes us uniquely able to facilitate and cement the relationships between First Responders and the communities they serve, relationships which are often fragile due to language barriers and imbedded fears on both sides.
The Listos staff is available to support government agencies in reaching their targeted audiences in a professional, culturally appropriate, and safe manner, creating stronger communities, better prepared residents, and solid relationships between citizens and government officials.
